SCHOOL KIDS ENJOY SUPER SCIENCE SHOW
CHILDREN from across the region were treated to a spectacular science extravaganza thanks to nearby scientists from local pharmaceutical a firm.
Staff from The Specials Laboratory, which manufacturers unlicensed medicines – known as ‘specials’ – that are bespoke-made for individual patients, were on hand to ‘wow’ the aspiring scientists with exciting experiments.
Part of the North East Pharmaceutical Industry Cluster (NEPIC) Super Science day held at Hexham Race Course, kids from several local schools were treated to educational explosions and the ‘elephant toothpaste experiment’ that involves overflowing multicoloured foam erupting from bottles on a demonstration table.
In total, 174 pupils attended the Science Day from St Mary's RC First School, Shaftoe Trust First School, Hexham East First School, Mickley First School, Wark First School and Broomhaugh CE First School.
Paul Townsend, technical manager at The Specials Laboratory, said: “The Super Science day provided us with a great opportunity to get local kids interested in learning and experiencing the wonderful world of science.
“As part of our ongoing community programme at The Specials Laboratory that involves us engaging with schools, colleges and universities, the day allowed us to inspire children to have an interest in science by showing them reactions that take place when different products are mixed.
“Based on the fantastic reaction from kids and adults, the day seemed to go really well and the children seemed to gain a great deal, which of course was the aim,” added Paul.
Recently crowned North East Manufacturer of the Year and North East Company of the Year across Northumberland & Tyneside, The Specials Laboratory is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of unlicensed medicines.
The fast-growing specialist manufacturer is one of the biggest employers in the Tynedale area with around 130 staff.
