YOUNGSTER SCOOPS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
OUTSTANDING student James Dean has been unveiled as the winner of an illustrious Young Enterprise North East award after being recognised for his contribution to enterprise.
The Sir John Moore Award, sponsored by The Specials Laboratory, was given to 17-year-old James for demonstrating outstanding personal progress for his role in setting up a company that designs and produces jigsaws and mouse mats.
Teenager James, a student at Catcote Business and Enterprise College, was nominated by teacher Mrs Alison Brown for his role in his Young Enterprise company ‘Super Cats’ after witnessing a dramatic improvement in his academic abilities.
James was presented with his prize, a certificate and a cheque for one hundred pounds at a glittering awards ceremony in Newcastle by Lynn Willis, human resource and organisational development manager at The Specials Laboratory.
Lynn said: “This fantastic prize is given to a student with learning difficulties or special education needs that has followed a Young Enterprise programme and as a result of doing so has impacted on their behaviour and life for the best.
“James embodies what this award is all about. It recognises James’ achievement of demonstrating outstanding progress in learning, personal development and acquisition of skills.”
Northumberland-based company The Specials Laboratory is a regular sponsor of the Sir John Moore’s Award, which is donated annually to each English Young Enterprise region in memory of Sir John Moore, by his daughter, Lady Grantchester.
The judging process for this award considers nominations from teachers against a set of criteria including the extent to which an individual has developed their self confidence and self esteem as well as personal, business, social and life skills.
Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading enterprise education charity and connects young people, business volunteers and educators, inspiring each other to succeed through enterprise.
The Young Enterprise programmes are all based on the principle of learning by doing, with this particular programme structured around classes, games, activities and role-play to help kids to develop knowledge and capabilities.
Recently crowned North East Manufacturer of the Year and North East Company of the Year across Northumberland & Tyneside, The Specials Laboratory is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of unlicensed medicines – known as ‘specials’ – which are bespoke-made for individual patients.
The fast-growing specialist manufacturer is one of the biggest employers in the Tynedale area with 130 staff and a major supporter of Young Enterprise.
