Careers Kids Get Specials Treatment

Business studies pupils from a local school visited The Specials Laboratory recently as part of their Careers Week.

Sixth formers at Prudhoe High School saw their studies put into practice when they visited The Specials Laboratory.

The company produces unlicensed medicines for retail chemists and hospital pharmacists, employing 150 people at its Prudhoe site.

Students were given a tour of the premises and learned about the manufacturing process, which sees 83% of orders processed and delivered to the customer within 24 hours.

The school's head of business Chris Shaw said: "It was very useful for the students. They saw how a medicine manufacturer goes about its job. They were told about the importance of motivating staff, and perhaps the biggest lesson was about the importance of hygiene. Hygiene is a top priority there."

Mr Shaw explained that the experience enabled the students to see what they had been learning in the classroom being put into practice. It had given them an interesting insight into the world of business.

The Specials Laboratory won two major awards towards the end of last year.

In October it was one of six regional winners of the National Training Award, in recognition of its commitment to the development of staff.

In November the company was recognised by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering for its willingness to share knowledge and expertise with other North-East practitioners.
